The Best On-Screen Chemistry of All-Time
Here are some of the most romantic couples ever to take to the screen. We are talking about iconic love and kisses, if you haven’t seen them for yourself and you consider yourself a romantic what are you waiting for??
1. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook
After watching this movie, how could you not fall head over heels in absolute hubba-hubba love for Ryan Gosling? This movie offered the perfect quantity of passionate youth, and let’s not forget that heart-pounding kiss in the rain which earned Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss. It goes without saying that these actors carried off Noah and Allie and their passion perfectly.
2. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in Twilight
Give me an E. Give me a D. Give me a W. Do you see where this is going? Team Edward all the way! Taylor Lautner might be a serious contender in the eyecandy stakes, and his abs look like they should start an acting career of their own, but Robert Pattinson is just the best. He is passionate and concerned where Jacob is overbearing and too busy turning into a wolf. The connection between Rob and Kristen Stewart is palpable, and while the jury is still out on whether they are really are together in real life, we’d like to think they are.
3. Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain
This movie was brave and spoke out about a subject that is still taboo for many people in a heart-warming and heart-breaking way. The disallowed love between Heath Ledger’s Ennis Del Mar and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Jack Twist was a study in longing and real, true love. And even if this film led to the real-life relationship between Ledger and his costar Michelle Williams, this movie will always be remembered for the boys. Heartrending and universal, what a story.
4. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr & Mrs Smith
To call this movie action-packed would be an understatement. Not only did bullets and sparks fly in the brilliant action sequences, but sparks flew off-camera too. Unfortunately no one told Jennifer Aniston at the time. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie played a seemingly mundane married couple, bored with each other, who lived double-lives as assassins, but this movie led to the rather exciting establishments of one of Hollywood’s hottest couples: the Almighty Brangelina! Watching their steamy love scenes on camera, feels like a fly-on-the-wall look at their private lives. And we all know we like to watch.
5. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge
Another tale of star-crossed lovers, sigh. Ewan McGregor played the innocent and optimistic writer, Christian while Nicole Kidman played the doomed courtesan and cabaret actress, Satine, who we find out later is suffering from tuberculosis. As they sing and dance their way through Baz Luhrmann’s musical wonderland we can’t help but feel their painful story. Throughout all the pomp and over the top costumes and dance routines, this couple did a brilliant job at showing “a love that will last forever,” even after Satine dies, leaving not a dry eye in the cinema.
6. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman
From a cold-hearted business agreement between a businessman and a call girl to a fairytale romance, this movie crept into our hearts. Not least because of that scene where Julia Roberts is shopping on Rodeo Drive. The audiences loved their onscreen connection so much that Gere and Roberts rekindled their romance in 1999’s Runaway Bride. Another great film.
7. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing
Way before we knew Jennifer Grey from Dancing with the Stars, she played Baby. She was the lucky girl who kindled a summer romance with the dreamy, elastic-hipped Patrick Swayze. And even though Patrick Swayze may no longer be with us, he will always be with us because; “No one puts Baby in a corner!”
